High School External Course Credit

Objectives

To increase the awareness of Officiating in Volleyball by offering the External Course option to those in Grades 11 and 12

To increase the number of officials in the various regions around the province by training candidates and getting them involved in the development process.  This will facilitate their interest in the sport of volleyball.

To recognize the efforts of the students in the volleyball officials’ program by awarding them credit towards graduation.

What is the External Course?

The External Course is an Education Ministry-Authorized course that allows heavily involved high school athletes and officials in their specific sports to get credit towards high school graduation.  This program is offered outside of the BC School System and set out in the Graduation Requirements Order.  The program is administered and monitored by the Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture, Sport and Community Development Branch.

 How Does the Program Work?

The student interested is responsible for contacting his/her school guidance counselor.  Either the student or the Counselor will then be responsible for informing Volleyball BC of the interest in completing the requirements.  Volleyball BC sets the standards (in accordance with the Ministry) for completion of the required components (practical and theory).  Upon successful completion of the requirements, the student will receive a certificate or letter of verification.  The school can then approve the completion and report it to the Ministry (Graduation Requirements Order).  It is the school’s responsibility to verify the authenticity of the documents submitted by the student.

Expectations From the Student

To qualify for the program, the student must have completed a theory component, pass required exams and complete a practical evaluation by a designated volleyball officials’ evaluator.  The following is the guideline for each course:

External Sport:  OFFICIAL 11

External Sport:  OFFICIAL 12

Minimum Level I – Local Official

Theory, Written Exam, Practical Evaluation

Minimum 50 hours of officiating (can include work done for development - e.g. allocating)

Minimum Official 11 or Certification at Local Level (subject to approval by Volleyball BC)

Minimum 100 hours of officiating (can include work done for development -e.g. allocating)

Note: The 100 hours is cumulative from Gr. 11

These officials can potentially be ready for Senior High school championships and the potential for qualifying for the next level (Provincial level)

Students are required to keep a log of their officiating duties and any other work done in relation to officiating.  This log must then be submitted to Volleyball BC for approval before a certificate or letter of verification can be issued.
